How to Read Crochet Patterns

A crochet pattern is a repeatable set of instructions. Read it once before starting, highlight your size, and circle every stitch count that applies to it.

Before the first stitch

• Check skill level, finished measurements, yarn weight, yardage, and hook size.
• Confirm whether the pattern uses US or UK terminology.
• Review special stitches and make a gauge swatch when fit matters.

Understand the notation

Parentheses often group stitches worked in one place, brackets group a repeated sequence, and an asterisk marks the start of a repeat. Count at the end of every row or round so errors stay small.
